Gary's Training Class Gary Wiggins is in the midst of a series of orienteering classes covering intermediate through advanced topics. Training sessions will be available for all skill levels from those who have successfully completed White and Yellow courses and are ready to begin learning intermediate skills to those who would like to improve their performance on Green and Red courses through learning advanced skills. Most classes will be conducted at Umstead State Park.

If you are interested in taking a class or teaching a class, e-mail Gary at magnoliamd@aol.com. For those interested in taking a class, please include a summary of your orienteering experiences so far. This information will be used to develop a training schedule.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes) Georgy has finished the Raven Rock Map.  Here is a sample...Section of new Raven Rock Map
This is the section were the steps go down to the river beside the cliffs.  One little mapping detail you may be interested to know is that when the spikes of the cliff symbol extend into the water it means that you can't get around the cliff.  Notice how the western cliff has had its spikes shortened to show that you can get by.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)An "A" national meet by BOK to start the next millennium! 7/23/98

We have decided to host a national "A" level event tentatively on April 8-9, 2000.  There is a lot to do just to get started.  We have to get permission for a location, our first choice would be Raven Rock, but lots of details must be worked out.   Then we must apply for sanctioning from the United States Orienteering Federation... then the real work begins!  But more about that later.

The team leaders for the major functions are:
Meet Director: Joseph Huberman ]
Course Design: Doug Corkhill [dwcatty@mindspring.com]
Start: Doug Corkhill [dwcatty@mindspring.com]
Finish: Gary Wiggins [Magnoliamd@aol.com]
Results: Andy Huber [arhuber@mindspring.com]
Registration: Ruth Bromer []

Changes at Pullen Park

There are some major ($600,000) plans for "improvements" to Pullen Park which includes adding lots of lighting, three significant parking areas (two sort of down in a hole, but one right up in front of the "Theater in the Park", picnic shelters and paved trails.

If you have any questions about the plans or the  process, please call 890-3285.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)The Raven Rock map is complete. Georgy finished February 28, and now is off to Charlotte to map more of Kings Mountain. We would like to thank Al Geiger for letting Georgy stay at his house, me, for letting Georgy use our car, and Marsh Hardy and Ann Jenns for letting me use their car when I needed it. There is a good bit of green, but there are large beautiful areas with only scattered downed trees. One of the best areas is quite near the parking area, so that will be convenient to use. We are tentatively planning an "A" meet there, and we need to have our first organizational meeting to make some of the crucial early decisions.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)BOK Newsletter -- Thanks Craig for a great job!   Welcome Jim, our new editor! 7/23/98

We all want to thank Craig Pepin for the wonderful job he did producing our newsletter. Craig is moving to Cullawee, NC and we wish him the best of luck at his new job.

Jim Helton [jhelton@aya.yale.edu] volunteered to be our newsletter editor, and we accepted wholeheartedly.  We have decided to distribute it over the web with e-mail pointers when it is updated.  In addition we will print and mail two versions per year for those who request them as well as a few extras to hand out at meets. Thanks, Jim, we are looking forward to your first issue.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)Georgy back from Russia again this winter. 7/23/98

Finally, we got some good news from Russia. Georgy is working on a project in Siberia that should be finished by November, and then he will come back to the States to work on Raven Rock for us and Kings Mountain for COK. We are hoping to have our "A" meet at Raven Rock, but there are still a lot of unknowns.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)We have a new Representative to the USOF Board of Directors! 6/98

I'm happy to announce that the SE Regional Elections had a very good participation and that we met the required quorum without a problem. The elections were uncontested, there were no write-in candidates. Therefore, Frank Campbell, GAOC, was elected as USOF Board Representative and John Fairley, COK, was elected as Alternate. Both candidates just started their 3-year term with the board meeting following the USOF Annual General Meeting on June 25, 1998. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Frank Campbell sent us this note:

Thank you for your support in electing me as your USOF Southeastern Board Representative. Together with COK's John Fairley(Alternate Representative) and Laurie Searle, GAOC's newly elected USOF Member At Large, I'm hopeful we all can make a difference. As you probably know, I am a strong proponent of youth involvement in orienteering. The southeast continues to challenge the rest of the country with its JROTC and youth involvement. While this area of growth shows promise for the southeast, there are genuine concerns in the areas of orienteering marketing, club expansion and general club support. In the coming months I will likely be seeking information from many of you regarding some of these areas.  Having just returned from the USOF National Convention, I'm excited about some of the long range initiatives being considered. Many of these ideas could have a positive impact on your club. Please stay tuned, voice your opinion and help contribute to the growth of orienteering in the southeast.  Frank Campbell

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)The Raven Rock Basemap is complete.  6/98
18.7 sq.km.  Hopefully we will get Raven Rock fieldchecked this fall.

Marat.jpg (29685 bytes)Marat K. Gizatulin

We got some very sad news.  On May 23, 1998 Marat K. Gizatulin, one of the best orienteering mapmakers in Russia, died from cancer.  We were notified by his son, Kamil Gizatulin, who can be reached at: delfin7@chat.ru, delfin_15@hotmail.com, or sdmb@ufa.ru.  Marat lived with us for several months while he fieldchecked the Umstead, Falls Lake, Schenck Forest, and Lake Johnson maps.  Marat was warm and friendly.  When things got tough, I will always remember his response, "no problem".  We were looking forward to seeing him again this fall, and while we will miss him, we will remember him by his excellent work on the maps we use at every event.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)The mapping project is done for this season.  3/98
We now have 5 new or rearranged maps, Falls Lake ( with the old man in the map), Schenck Forrest, Lake Johnson, Bond Park, and of course Umstead Park.  Georgiy returned to Russia on Sunday, starting with the train to Washington DC at 5:45 AM, and arriving in Moscow about 8:00 PM Monday night.  Then he must find transportation for the 2000 Km trip back home to Siberia.   The Raven Rock map may very well be postponed until next winter.  There really isn't any rush because we now have the Falls Lake map.  Pat Dunlavey is working on the basemap, and that should be done by the end of January, so in any case, we will be ready.  Georgiy would like to come back, and said he would try and make arrangements.  We collected $85 for his gift certificate at Provision Company, and he bought a new pair of boots.

I'll be working on the overprint of the trees and new trails for our old Umstead Map, so it will be up-to-date, and we can begin to sell it through the stores.   We also need to determine if there is a market for the Falls Lake Map and whether we should have it commercially printed or just print on an as needed basis.  The problem is, that it doesn't fit on one page.

Oarrow.jpg (1537 bytes)Neighborhood entry points to Umstead not for Orienteering any more. 2/98
I had a meeting with Martha Woods, the superintendent of Umstead Park, and she approved all of our 1998 event dates, but decided that our meets have grown to the point where it is not safe for us to park along the roads outside the park during an event.  While she has no jurisdiction to prevent us as individuals from parking at the "neighborhood entry points" she will not issue us a permit for a park activity where we don't have adequate parking for the event.

She recognized that this would put much of our map out of reach, so she has offered to let us use the group camps as parking areas without charge during the season when they are closed, roughly from October to March.  This will give us pretty good access to the park except for two areas, Umstead West, and Ebenezer Church Road.   There is not much we can do about Umstead West, but if we can contact the Union that has the building and Parking lot on Ebenezer Church Road, then we could park there, and enter the park across the street, so if you know any of those folks, please let me know.

As a result of this change we need to reassign locations to our 1998 meets, and we can now include Schenck Forest and Falls Lake in the mix.  So, meet directors, give me a call with your new locations, and potential meet directors, step forward and claim one of the unclaimed events in 1998.
