This was an unseasonably warm December day with temperatures in the upper 70’s. As usual at Schenck Forest, dogs out-numbered people except for orienteers. Turnout was good for this meet and included a local Boy Scout troop and a ROTC group from Duke.

Joseph Huberman designed the courses and Al Geiger did fieldwork. The white course was 1.8 km in length and Kyle Halloran again ran the winning time. The 2.1 km Yellow course had ten entrants, with the winning time being 61:30 by Lara Geiger, followed by Chris Tart at 70:15 and Jim O’Donnell at 78:15.

Orange was a challenging 3.4 km which only 4 of 8 entrants finished. Scott Cole had the winning time of 76:20, nearly 18 minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Karen Hales.

The Brown course was also 3.4 km and had 8 competitors. Joan Brock again turned in the winning time on Brown, 53:15. Dan Lyons edged Ron Brown by 15 second to take second place at 72:00.

The 4.4 km Green course had the most entrants, 13, all of whom finished. The Brown and Green courses shared 8 controls, but the Green had two controls in the far North-West section of the preserve which were not on the Brown course. Gary Wiggins had the winning time of 65:15 followed by Peter Brock at 66:37 and Joe Halloran at 75:15. The rootstock control 4 appeared to cause some problems on this course due to it not being centered on the circle on the map and not being completely specified in the clue sheet.

Joseph Huberman who also gave an instructional course for novice orienteers made preprinted maps. Ruth Bromer handled registration. Lara Geiger helped set controls for the White course and Gary and Wes Wiggins helped collect controls.
