BOK's Enloe Orienteering Team wins the US Interscholastic JV Championships!
Jonathan McDaniel, Lori Huberman, & Jonathan Fitz-Simons take the JV trophy.BOK fielded a winning group of Juniors at this year's Interscholastic Championships in Maryland on March 31, April 1, 2001. The Enloe Team squeaked by after Jonathan Fitz-Simons picked up the wrong map at the start on the first day. Fortunately the map had a longer and harder course than the correct map, so the team was not disqualified and his time on the more difficult course was allowed to stand. Even with this handicap they handily came in first.
Carlie Huberman takes first in F-12.In the individual competition, Jonathan McDaniel took first in High School JV Men, Lori Huberman took first in High School JV Women and Carlie Huberman took first in F-12. Unfortunately, because of the map mix-up Jonathan Fitz-Simons was disqualified from the individual competition, but had his time been allowed to stand he would have taken second in High School JV Men.
In other results, Martin Greiner took third in M-35, Joseph Huberman, ninth in M-50, and Ruth Bromer, fifth in F-50

Gary Wiggins will coordinate a series of orienteering classes covering intermediate through advanced topics. Training sessions will be available for all skill levels from those who have successfully completed White and Yellow courses and are ready to begin learning intermediate skills to those who would like to improve their performance on Green and Red courses through learning advanced skills. Most classes will be conducted at Umstead State Park.
If you are interested in taking a class or teaching a class, e-mail Gary at magnoliamd@aol.com. For those interested in taking a class, please include a summary of your orienteering experiences so far. This information will be used to develop a training schedule.

Interscholastic Championships 1/18/2000
Jonathan McDaniel, Lori Huberman, and Ed Su won the US Interscholastic Championships at the Georgia Navigator's Cup on January 15 and 16, 2000
BOK coaches, Joseph Huberman & Ruth Bromer trained the team of Enloe 9th graders over the last two months so they could compete in the Interscholastic Competition in Georgia last weekend. The team practiced weekly from mid September, and then in mid December practiced almost daily. Practices lasted about 2 hours and consisted of: going out into the woods with a map and setting and retrieving controls; running with the coach while following their position on the map; choosing the next spot and racing to the location using different route choices; designing courses; practicing pace counting; handling and orienting the map while on the run; and general fooling around. The team is now looking forward to competing in our RavenRock2000 April event.

Georgy [the person who made the map] will be coming to NC in early March to update our map and vet our control sites. This will take a huge burden off the group setting up the controls, and improve the accuracy of the map.
We haven't started putting our volunteer worker teams together yet, and will do so in mid February. Be sure to set April 1 & 2 aside, because we will be having our practice event where the worker teams will meet at the park and run through setting up the start and finish. Workers will also run their courses for their official times so they will be free to work the day of the event. This will be the final check and rehearsal for the event on April 8 - 9. [This rehearsal event is for workers only.]
I spoke to the Park Superintendent at Raven Rock State Park, and he has
"approved in principle" our having an "A" meet at Raven Rock. There were
too few people that could come to the meeting I suggested in the last note
(possibly because I suggested the wrong month), so I am going to schedule it
at a later time after I get more information.
Charlie Buckner requested that we have a training event between meets. If
there is some additional interest in this send me a reply and I'll try and
put something together. Typically we would meet at one of the forests and
run through some exercises that develop some of the more advanced skills
that people need to succeed on the Orange and above courses. This generally
involves running through the forest for about 90 minutes with stops to
discuss different strategies. I would also like volunteers to run one of
these training sessions on a day of your choice.
